Food

There are many community gardens that grow and distribute fresh, healthy food. Many offer group garden times to help you learn about growing some of your own food. Some areavailable for on-your-iwn picking.  If you can, consider volunteering.

Kane Street Community Garden at Kane & St Cloud. Garden hours for volunteers and harvesting. There's an open house there on May 17. Sign up at the website.

La Crosse Community Victory Gardens. Three sites: Aptiv (3000 South Avenue), Hogan (19th & Mississippi) and City Hall (EAST side of building). Weekly group garden times but anyone may pick what they need whenever they want. Planting has begun! Email Ministering beans at gmail or visit the website.

GROW La Crosse School gardens. See link for sites and to schedule volunteer time.

Northside Neighborhood Gardens. See link for details.

The Nature Place Produce Garden at Myrick Park. Harvested produce offered while it lasts.

YMCA Food Forest at West Ave. & Main St. Sign up to help maintain the garden or go and pick when you want.

Onalaska Community Gardens near Mayo Clinic. Individuals rent plots for the year.

In progress, an urban farm at Gundersen Health, 7th St & South Ave.

Do you have space in your yard and want a garden but don't know how to do one? Volunteer at one of these sites to learn the basics and grow a community of resources. Ask if someone who knows how to garden would be willing to show you how in exchange for space to garden.

Consider starting out with a container garden - a few large planters filled with compost or an elaborate set up. Or start with a small plot and do a lasagna garden or a square-foot garden. Start small and build up.
