Grifters everywhere

Anyone who has donated to a candidate knows you go on a list the minute they get your contact information. The only way to avoid this, in Wisconsin at least, is to donate $10 or less in cash. Then, the candidate doesn't need to collect your contact information for campaign finance reports.

Otherwise, you enter the fun house of infinite asks. You can't unsuscribe, you can't make them stop. Block them and they pop up under a different number. You can't return the mountains of campaign contribution requests. And, because they are political communication, donation requests (often DEMANDS) are not stopped by adding your number to the Do Not Call Registry.

Annoying. Frustrating. Maddening. But mostly harmless, right?

Well, no. 

A new article on Substack by Adam Bonica, Hook and Squeeze, details how, "Democratic consultants, committees, and party leaders built a fundraising spam pipeline that funnels money from a captive pool of elderly donors into their own operations."

This must-read article describes not only who gets hurt--often elderly people who end up donating tens, sometimes hundreds, of thousands of dollars they can not afford to lose--but also, who doesn't want us to know. Bonica details his attempts to publish the piece in mainstream outlets only to be blocked by the threat of legal action.

Read this piece and watch out for friends or family members who may be sucked into this grifty cesspool. Share the article with others. It includes several illustrations and examples of the types of emails, texts, and letters to watch out for.

Don't stop supporting candidates, but donate directly to them through their campaign sites or by mailing a check. Candidates need money, but they may not get much of what's raised in their names by some of these sleezy businesses.

El NIÑO WARNING

To all Governors, Mayors, First Responders, and anyone entrusted with public safety, disaster preparedness and relief:

We the undersigned consisting of scientists, meteorologists, and concerned citizens are greatly alarmed by the lack of public discourse, urgency and planning surrounding what is an impending, large scale, historic public emergency.

More and more data and modeling every day indicates we are within 3 to 5 months of experiencing the most dramatic El Niño warming event in recorded history.

Ocean temperatures in the central eastern Pacific will rise between 5 to 7.5 degrees Fahrenheit (3-4 degrees Celsius) peaking in October of this year. This will trigger a heating escalation through 2027 and into 2028 that will push already dangerously high planetary air and sea temperatures to near catastrophic levels.

This El Niño driven warming will lead to significantly more global flooding, fires, storms, droughts, deadly heat events, dangerous turbulence, and most concerning, a significant threat to food supply chains, crops, and power grids.

The previous strongest recorded El Niño occurred in 1877 leading to 40 million deaths worldwide from famine.

And this coming El Niño event looks to be even stronger.

And even more critically, it will occur on top of already record high sea and air temperatures.

Many of us through the years have attempted to warn the public during human caused rapid warming events about the increased risk of extreme weather events. We have had to watch as historic fires destroyed two cities in an unprepared Los Angeles, an actual hurricane hit Asheville North Carolina, campers were swept away and killed by flash floods in Texas, Corpus Christi runs out of water and on and on and on.

But the scale and threat of this coming warming event is simply too large to ignore in the name of business/politics as usual.

States, cities, and counties should be immediately:

• reinforcing river banks and lakes against all time high cresting numbers
• increasing funding for fire fighting and rescue
• running geological tests on populated hillsides
• bolstering power grids
• building more tornado shelters, cooling and high ground centers
• increasing life guards and warning systems for beaches
• informing citizens of potentially life threatening increased risk

Instead the signatories of this cry for action see mostly silence and inaction.

We know many simply aren’t able to process the science behind this entreaty through anything other than the will of big donors, party politics and poll numbers.

But for those that still take the responsibilities of their office, appointment or job as something sacred and more important than career or donor money please, we urge you not to dismiss this letter.

Concentration Camps

Remember, on top of all the grift, war, climate crisis, election insecurity, lies, and still-unreleased Epstein files, we are now full of concentration camps, "places in which groups of people are detained and confined against their will, under harsh conditions and in violation of their human and legal rights."

For the most part, detainees have not broken any laws. As the American Immigration Lawyers Associaiton explains, "Immigration detention is civil. In other words, it is not supposed to be a punishment. While some individuals enter immigration detention because of an encounter with the criminal justice system, their detention is for civil immigration purposes." In the last year, Congress has given DHS nearly $250 billion for immigration enforcement

In a recent online conversation with journalist Tim Dickinson, Juan Proaño, CEO of LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) talked about the centers, the deaths,the inhumane conditions, the money, and the fight to close the facilities.

• The  Dilley "Family Detention Center" in Texas, run by a private company, receives 180 MILLION taxpayer dollars per year, more than $720 million over the life of the contract
• There are currently 70,000 people--from babies to seniors with disabilities-- in U.S. detention centers
• The number of deaths in detention centers has increased more than 400% in the last 15 months from a corollary period of four years ago. The number of deaths is likely an undercount; ICE uses various tactics to move detainees to other facilities to avoid including them in the counts.

Children are expected to represent themselves in immigration court (a practice that started during the Biden administration). Read "Judge to baby: File an Asylum Application."

The Trump regime has appointed hundreds of unqualified immigration judges

They are still sending detainees to "third countries" where they have no connections or resources

ICE is planning to equip its employees with electric shock gloves (which, unbelievably, are already being used in schools).

What can we do?

• Check out the Detention Watch Network
• Listen in on Indivisible's Immigration Justice Call on August 20 at 7 p.m. 
• Get involved with Voces de la Frontera's No 287g campaign to stop local law enforcement officers from aiding ICE agents. 
• Join the National Immigration Law Center call to take back the $240 billion Congress approved for mass deportations.
• Sign the ACLU's message demanding that Congress stop ICE killings. 
• Read about De-ICE Citizens Bank, and be inspired by a grassroots group that successfully convinced a detention center-funder to end its relationship with the facility
• Find a list of other corporations supporting ICE in 2026.

Other suggestions? Send them in. 

 

Don't forget. Don't let this be the new normal.

Support the North Side

 

After the Library Board voted to close the North Side Library late last year, a group of area residents formed the Northside Foundation to purchase and remake the space into a community center.

Their proposal was the only one submitted by the city's August 14 deadline. It will be discussed at the August 26 3 p.m. Economic and Community Development Committee meeting and voted on at the September 10 Common Council meeting.

Congress has the power to shut this down. Tell them to get these creepy cameras out of our communities now.

We're demanding Congress protect our right to privacy and ban this dystopian technology from our communities.

Climate Fellows

Sustainability Institute Climate Fellows Program is a cohort-based leadership and learning experience that empowers young adults to design, implement, and lead meaningful climate action projects in the La Crosse community.

Through a partnership between the Sustainability Institute and City of La Crosse, this program looks to build on previous Youth Climate Action Fund (YCAF) success - taking what worked, tweaking what didn't and mixing in our wins from a past program - MPower. Sustainability Institute Climate Fellows combines hands-on project development with collaborative learning, mentorship, and connections to local sustainability.

Fellows will join the cohort to explore past projects, make connections to the City of La Crosse's Climate Action Plan, learn from local leaders, and ultimately develop/execute a climate action project in our community.

The Climate Fellows program is open to young adults from all academic backgrounds who are passionate about making a positive impact in their community through climate action. The program welcomes students enrolled at a college or university in the La Crosse area and/or young adults ages 18-24 who have graduated high school, regardless of their field of study or previous experience with sustainability.

Notice is further given that members of other governmental bodies may be present at the above scheduled meeting to gather information about a subject over which they have decision-making responsibility.

Per Drone XL, an industry magazine, "The Minneapolis City Council deadlocked 6-6 on Thursday, July 16, 2026, killing a no-cost, 75-day Drone as First Responder trial with Skydio and turning Minneapolis away from a program model at least five other Minnesota cities already run. Council Vice President Jamal Osman, a co-sponsor of the measure, switched sides and cast the deciding no vote, citing Skydio’s equipment sales to the Israeli military and its work with the Department of Homeland Security on immigration enforcement."

Middle East Monitor reported in November, "AI-powered surveillance drones used by the Israeli occupation forces to carry out genocide in Gaza are now being deployed across the United States to monitor protesters and civilians.

"Built by the US-based company Skydio, these autonomous drones were shipped to Israel in the early days of the onslaught on Gaza, where they were tested and refined in live combat conditions."

Why are we even inviting them to anything in our city? What if a concentration camp company wanted to give a demonstration of their quick-build detention centers or the electric shock glove company wants to do a demonstration of their new "crowd control" technology? Where is the line?

Our Democracy Team congratulates David Crowley and all of his supporters, after their narrow win in this week’s gubernatorial primary. We also truly appreciate those candidates who came up short (Francesca Hong, Kelda Roys, Joel Brennan), as responses to our Governor Candidate Survey showed all of them strongly supporting transition to clean energy, expanded voting access, and election integrity. 

By way of contrast, Tom Tiffany’s record and recent statements show him strongly opposed to our Third Act principles and priorities. On every issue we are tracking, a Tiffany victory in November would be a disaster. (For a quick list of specifics, see ““Don’t Be Fooled” from our friends at Grassroots North Shore.)  

Now that we know who will be running in the November election, you can expect to hear from our team soon, with a slate of Third Act-endorsed Wisconsin candidates for Governor, State Legislature, and U.S. Congress. Our special focus will be on key legislative races, with hopes for majorities in the WI Senate and Assembly that will be able to advance clean energy, protect against hyper-scale data centers, strengthen election integrity, and lots more.  

Over the next 2 ½ months, there will be many possible ways for each person reading this to help! Writing postcards or editorials, handing out literature at events, making campaign donations, knocking on doors, phone-banking—it’s going to be a busy fall!

The City of La Crosse Municipal Transit (MTU) will offer free service on all routes on Election Day, August 11.

“Everyone is welcome to ride the bus all day long,” said MTU Director Adam Lorentz. “Regardless of your route, we will help you get to your polling place.”

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Find your polling place, check your registration, see what's on your ballot at https://myvote.wi.gov. If you are not registered, you may register at your polling place.
