Sign-making for April 5

From La Crosse Hands Off organizer Tasha L:

We are little more than a week away from our first of what I expect to be one of many more events to come ... as these changes are greatly impacting all of us in many ways.

On April 5th, the signs we make will share our stories of how the ineptitude of Trump and Musk's decisions have dire consequences for our future personally, nationally and worldwide. So, when it comes to thinking about what you want to put on your signs, think about what matters to you. Whether that be the climate, our bodies, our libraries, our government, our schools, our healthcare, public parks let the message be "HANDS OFF!"

In order to prepare for the event, I will be hosting a sign making event on Friday, April 4 at the Main Library in the Creation Space. I plan on being there from 10:00 am until 1:30 pm. We are able to use materials that the library has but I would encourage anyone to bring in donations of craft items that you are no longer using as the library has graciously allowed us to utilize the space.

If you are unable to make signs for the event or unable to attend the sign making event, we will be making extra signs with "hands off..." and bring markers so that you can fill in the blank. I would also encourage people to repurpose signs from the April 1st election, any past elections, cardboard boxes, etc., to reduce waste as well as cost for everyone.

Medicaid Town Hall

Monday, March 24, 2025

Doors @ 5:30, Event @ 6:00

UW-La Crosse Student Union
521 East Ave N, La Crosse
(accessibly by #4 MTU bus)

President Trump and Elon Musk have announced plans to cut Medicaid by nearly a trillion dollars — money they'll hand over to billionaires. These cuts will run people out of their homes, tank local economies, and cost lives. We need to join together and fight back.

Join State Sen. Brad Pfaff and State Reps. Tara Johnson, Steve Doyle, and Jill Billings as we learn about what's at stake for all of us, hear from our neighbors who are directly at risk, and talk about what we're doing to fight back and how you can get involved.

Whether you're already ready to march, you have a story to share, or if you have questions that need answers, join us on March 24 at 5:30 pm in the UW-L Student Union.

Oppose more gas plants in Wisconsin

From the Union of Concerned Scientists:

This month, the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSCW) will be considering a proposal from the Wisconsin Electric Power Company (We Energies) to construct and operate a new fossil gas plant in Oak Creek. We can’t let We Energies rush into building new fossil gas plants and lock ratepayers into a risky investment that threatens public health and our environment.

The Union of Concerned Scientists invites you to join us, our partner organizations and concerned Wisconsin residents, in-person or virtually, at the upcoming public hearing for the Oak Creek Combustion Turbine gas plant proposal.

As a Wisconsin resident, you have a voice in this process. Share an oral comment urging the PSCW to reject the proposed gas plant because of the impacts it will have on residents, electricity rates, and the environment.

PSCW Oak Creek, Gas Plant Proposal Hearing Session 1

Date: Tuesday, March 25 at 1:00 p.m.

Location: Oak Creek Community Center, 8580 South Howell Ave., Oak Creek, Wisconsin, 53154

PSCW Oak Creek, Gas Plant Proposal Hearing Session 2

Date: Tuesday, March 25 at 6:00 p.m.

Location: Oak Creek Community Center, 8580 South Howell Ave., Oak Creek, Wisconsin, 53154

Please register for one of two hearing sessions—you may attend in-person, or join via Zoom or telephone, or listen via YouTube.

If approved, the proposed project would bring five new gas-powered units, generating up to 1100 MW of electricity to Milwaukee County as early as winter 2027, along with the utility’s separate proposal to build a liquified natural gas (LNG) facility and related pipelines at the site. We Energies expects the new gas plant would operate for at least 30 years, a timeline that exceeds Wisconsin’s clean energy goals and imposes unnecessary costs that Wisconsin residents will have to shoulder. The estimated construction cost of the proposed project sits at $1.205 billion, not factoring in additional capital expenditures.

The public hearings provide an opportunity for concerned Wisconsin residents and stakeholders to provide oral comments to the PSCW. This is a valuable opportunity to share your personal perspective as well as facts about the proposed gas plant and its potential impact.

Register today—we will email you talking points and additional resources.

Questions?

Please call the City Clerk’s Office at 608-789-7510 or email elections@cityoflacrosse.org.

What's the Plan?

Every Thursday, Indivisible co-founders Ezra Levin and Leah Greenberg help wade through the week’s news,  answer your questions, and provide timely calls to action. Register here for the March 20 2 p.m. call.

What we can do now.

1. A very important election is coming on April 1. Judge Susan Crawford is running for a State Supreme Court seat. She's running against Elon Musk's $10+ million in GOTV and ads for a MAGA sycophant. Who controls the 2026 Wisconsin elections controls the future. Get involved in this election now! Plan to vote and encourage and help others vote.

2. Regular visibility events are a way to bring attention to the ongoing coup. Thursdays from noon to 12:30 at Fourth & Main, Women in Black hold a silent vigil. Fridays from noon to 1 p.m  stand at the Social Security Building, 210 Seventh St S, to highlight the harms to our country by the Trump slash & burn operation being led by Elon Musk. This Friday, March 21, protect immigrants.

3. Call Congress. Derrick Van Orden is not doing his job - he refuses to hold or attend in-person, open to the public events. He has backed out of scheduled events and falsely claims paid agitators are forcing him to hide. Call and tell his staff we want an in-person town hall meetings where he must face his constituents and hear directly how his actions are affecting us. Washington office: Phone: (202) 225-5506. La Crosse office: (608) 782-2558.

Tammy Baldwin voted NO on the awful continuing resolution. Call and thank her. But, her leader, Schumer, and eight Democratic colleagues voted for it. They have no apparent plan to use Congressional tools to lead the fight against The Great Dismantling. Tell her to call for new leadership and to start communicating how voters can support the opposition. Senate Democrats have had months, if not years, to plan an opposition to  Trump². Instead, they continue to throw up their hands and plead powerlessness. Worse, they continue to fundraise off of their fecklessness.  DC: 202-224-5653. La Crosse: 608-796-0045.

4. Join together to support and protect those who are being hurt, to inform those who still don't get it, and to demonstrate resistance and invite others to resist. Share info about events you know of.

April 5 is a national "HAND OFF!" Day of Action. Email Coulee Progressive if you can help organize in La Crosse or sign up to attend an organizing call on Friday at 2 p.m.

"There is never time in the future in which we will work out our salvation. The challenge is in the moment. The time is always now.” - James Baldwin.

Fish for the Future

Protect Our Water, Break a Record

Water is the lifeblood of our region. The Great Lakes are where it all begins, containing 84% of North America’s surface fresh water. We all know how important it is to keep our lakes clean, and that's why we can't let Enbridge’s dangerous Line 5 oil pipeline continue to threaten our waterways.

We’re setting out to break the record for the largest display of origami fish, and we want YOU to be part of it! Each paper fish represents our shared commitment to protecting the Great Lakes.

Join Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration and Wisconsin Sierra Culb to break the record for the largest display of origami fish! Let’s show the world that we’re united in protecting our waterways and shutting down Line 5 for once and for all.

Call Right Now

This continuing resolution makes all the illegal impoundments, closings, and firings legal. "This CR might as well be called the DOGE ENABLEMENT ACT." - Sam Seder, Majority Report

From Indivisible: Senate Republicans need Democratic votes to pass anything, but instead of negotiating in good faith, they’re pushing for an MAGA continuing resolution (CR) that makes extreme cuts that will jeopardize Social Security, leave tens of thousands of families without homes or food, and slashes benefits to veterans. Instead of trying to rein in the Trump and Musk power grab, this CR legitimizes it.

Almost every House Democrat stood united and voted NO on this CR. Now it’s time for Senate Dems to take a stand and oppose this outrageous bill. They must use their leverage, hold the line, and insist on a clean, short-term CR that keeps the government open without giving Trump and Musk a blank check.

If Democrats are unified in support of a short-term CR and Republicans choose to shut down the government rather than agree to their reasonable demands, Republicans will own the shutdown. Then, we can use the March recess to hold those Republicans accountable and make their time in-district as painful as possible, so that they’re forced to negotiate a funding bill that includes ironclad safeguards to rein in Trump and Musk and protects essential programs.

But we need Democrats to stay strong and not flinch. They must vote NO on cloture, which ends debate and allows for a simple-majority vote on final passage of the bill, until they have guaranteed they have enough votes to actually win a clean 30 day CR.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has indicated he will vote yes along with enough Democrats to pass the Republicans' CR. They are voting this morning. Call now.

It takes one senator to deny unanimous consent for a time agreement. The House Dems, the federal workers, everyone opposed to the Schumer Surrender would be happy to have additional time to gather 41 no votes on final cloture. Any senator can do it. - David Dayen. Call your senators now. (A Guide to Unanimous Consent

“Hello. My name is [your name], I’m a resident of [your state] and I’m calling to ask the Senator to VOTE NO on cloture and VOTE NO on the House-passed Continuing Resolution. This bill is a devastating ratification of the Elon Musk coup and I’m calling to ask you to VOTE NO ON CLOTURE.”

"The Republicans' extreme spending bill removes all of the guardrails and all of the accountability measures to ensure that money is being spent in the way that Congress had directed for it to be spent. This turns the federal government into a slush fund for Donald Trump and Elon Musk. It sacrifices Congressional authority, and it's deeply partisan. To me, is is almost unthinkable why  Senate Democrats would hand the few pieces of leverage that we have for free when we've been sent here to protect Social Security, protect Medicaid, and protect Medicare." - Alexandria Ocasio Cortez

Fax (202-228-3027) or email Schumer (reports are that his voicemails are full) and his aides:
  • Senator at Schumer.senate.gov
  • mike_lynch at schumer.senate.gov
  • meghan_taira at schumer.senate.gov

"This CR empowers DOGE, continues the random wacky cuts, projects Donald Trump from the consequences of his actions, eliminates the possibility that Congress could stop the tariff wars. It is full of radioactive poison wrapped in a nougat-filled layer, covered in dessicated moose shit, rolled up in asbestos  and you're not going to convince me it's a fucking bon bon, Chuck Schumer." - Rick Wilson, The Lincoln Project

Is our Democrats Learning? Update: NO - David Dayen, American Prospect

"This is an outrage. What [Schumer] is doing is giving the stamp of approval to Donald Trump to move money around to continue the unilateral destruction of the federal government. It is helping Elon Musk and Donald Trump." - Jen Rubin, The Contrarian

"This is not a bill that would simply continue the funding levels of the government for the next half year. This is a power giveaway to an executive already drunk with power. This would embolden the president to continue tearing down government services  closing Social Security offices, illegally withholding funds, illegally seizing more and more authority from the US Congress, ... But worst of all, in my view, is we would be giving it to him." - Sen. Adam Schiff

Black Thursday in the Democratic Senate: An Explainer by Josh Marshall, TPM "Schumer went to floor and announced that Republicans didn’t have the votes for cloture. On first glance it appeared his caucus had decided to defy the President and his congressional party. But it was a ploy. He was playing his voters for fools."

"Trump and OMB Dir. Russ Vought are already crafting a plan to impound some of the funding in the coming CR, multiple sources tell me. Further spending cuts were part of GOP leaders’ pitch to conservatives when CR passed House last week." - Liz Elkind, Fox Congressional Reporter

Wednesday, March 12, 2025

CALL SENATORS NOW!

Tell them:
1. Vote NO on Cloture AND
2. Vote NO on the Republican spending bill.

Don’t let them pivot to reconciliation. The GOP doesn’t need Dem votes on that, and they know it.

TODAY is the showdown.

It should be very clear: any vote for Cloture will be considered a vote for the bill.

People aren’t going to be tricked with procedural games. They know exactly what is going on.

CALL NOW

Baldwin (WI) 202-224-5653

Smith (MN) 202-224-5641

Klobuchar (MN) 202-224-3244

The Democrats are preparing to cave. "Senate Ds, led by @schumer.senate.gov, want to offer the base show votes instead of forcing a real negotiation with Rs, because they think they will lose. l @schumer.senate.gov is whipping Ds to vote for the Trump-Musk coup continuing resolution. The plan is that at least 8 Ds vote *for* cloture, then offer amendments to "improve" the CR which will fail, then cast a meaningless vote against the CR. Schumer is looking to scam the American people. Democrats have announced they intend to vote for cloture in return for meaningless show votes on amendments they know will fail."

Result: No filibuster and only 50+ votes needed to pass. KEEP CALLING.

Protest Reports

About 75 people gathered on all four corners of West Avenue S. and Jackson Avenue Friday at noon to Stand Up for Science as part of the national day of protest to draw attention to illegal impoundments and firings that are disrupting important scientific research, medical treatment, and climate action, and upending the lives of scientists, families, and communities around the country.

THERE WILL BE WEEKLY FRIDAY VISIBILITY RALLIES STARTING MARCH 14 FROM NOON TO 1 P.M. NEAR THE SOCIAL SECURITY OFFICE ROUDABOUT AT 7TH & CASS. MORE DETAILS COMING.

###

From James:

Had a good rally at the UWL Free Speech rally today, about 30 people, mostly students. I didn’t want to miss the pro-science demonstration but I went to the university instead. Channel 19 showed up. There were a few MAGAts hanging around, half a dozen young men. They tried to provoke us but didn’t succeed. One was desperately seeking attention. I don’t think he was a student there.

I ran across a Facebook group, Opportunity Wisconsin. Posters suggested we recall or impeach Van Orden for dereliction of duty. Good idea. Not sure how to go about it. Like Johnson and Tiffany, he is a constant source of embarrassment.

We had good response downtown yesterday* and our numbers are growing.

If you can't make it to the official Madison event, come to the corner of West Ave S and Jackson Ave in La Crosse on March 7 at noon for a visibility event to support science and scientists, research and health care, science education, and more! Stay for a few minutes or an hour.

Parking is tight near here. Best bets are somewhere along the bus route (park & ride the MTU Circulator or #1 bus) or the side streets (11th & 13th) south of the intersection.

Bring a sign in support of science, scientists, health care providers, researchers, educators, etc. and in support of public science - NIH, NOAA, NSF, NIEHS, NIAID, CDC, NASA, EPA, NPS, USDA, and more.

From a friend:

Representative Derrick Van Orden claims that DOGE is "taking steps to reduce the number of unelected bureaucrats." - Do the people in this article sound like "bureaucrats" to you???
